Server configuration

The Dell PowerEdge R740 rack server ships with two Xeon Gold 6246R processors running at 3.4 GHz and 384 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory. It is built for organisations that need a dense 2U platform for virtualisation, database or high-performance compute workloads. The chassis supports up to eight 3.5-inch drive bays and includes a PERC H730P RAID controller. No drives are installed, so storage capacity is chosen by the buyer.

Compatibility check

Verify that your rack provides at least 36 inches of depth, 24 inches of width and 10 inches of height for the 2U form factor. The unit weighs 40 pounds and requires two 750 W power supplies, so confirm available PDU outlets and circuit capacity. Network connectivity uses a 10 GbE 2-port 562T adapter; ensure your switch ports and cabling support that speed. The iDRAC9 Enterprise licence is included for remote management.

Thermals and power

Dual 750 W supplies share the load and provide redundancy during normal operation. The system uses integrated graphics, which keeps additional heat output low compared with discrete GPU configurations. Fans are managed by iDRAC firmware tuned to the installed CPU and memory population. Acoustic levels will reflect a 2U rack design under typical data-centre airflow conditions.
