The Dell PowerEdge R740xd packs twelve 3.5-inch drive bays and dual Xeon Platinum 8160 processors into a 2U rack chassis. Each CPU provides 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across sixteen 32 GB modules. It is built for software-defined storage, service-provider workloads and virtual desktop infrastructure.

Hot-swap bays and redundant power

Twelve front-accessible 3.5-inch bays hold the included 4 TB 7.2 K SATA drives, all managed by a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache and battery-backed write cache. The controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Dual 750 W platinum hot-swap power supplies and a quad-port network daughter card with two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links provide resilience and connectivity. iDRAC 9 Enterprise enables full out-of-band management.

Verify rack depth and network cabling

Confirm your rack can accommodate the full chassis depth and that the rails supplied will mount securely in your cabinet. Ensure you have SFP+ transceivers and fibre or direct-attach cables for the 10 Gb ports if you plan to use them. Check that your power distribution units deliver the correct connectors for dual 750 W supplies. The system supports up to 3 TB of DDR4 across twenty-four slots if you need to expand memory later.
