The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rackmount server designed for storage-intensive workloads such as software-defined storage and virtual desktop infrastructure. It ships with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6134 processors running at 3.2 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. Sixteen 32 GB DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC modules provide 512 GB of memory across 24 slots. The system targets organisations that need high drive density in a compact rack footprint.

Drive capacity and controller

Twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays connect to a Dell PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Two 400 GB SATA 6 Gb/s enterprise SSDs are installed from the factory. The 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller handles mixed drive types without requiring an additional HBA. Buyers who need more storage than two SSDs provide must populate the remaining bays themselves.

Cooling and power redundancy

Dual 1100 watt platinum-efficiency power supplies operate in redundant hot-swap configuration to maintain uptime during a module failure. Standard Dell rack rails and a front bezel are included for straightforward cabinet installation. The 2U chassis uses internal airflow management suited to dense storage deployments.
