This 500 GB hard drive uses a 2.5-inch form factor with a 7 mm height and a SATA 6.0 Gb/s interface. It spins at 7200 RPM and includes a 32 MB cache. The drive is intended for laptops, MacBooks, PS3 or PS4 consoles and USB enclosures where a standard 2.5-inch SATA bay is available.

Bare drive with 7 mm slim profile

The unit ships as a bare drive without a bracket or screws. Its 7 mm height fits thin-and-light notebooks and most 2.5-inch drive caddies. The SATA connector is backward compatible with 3.0 Gb/s ports, so it will operate in older laptops that only support the previous generation.

Mechanical limits of 7200 RPM SATA

Sequential throughput is bounded by the SATA 6.0 Gb/s link and the physical rotation speed. Random access latency is higher than solid-state storage, so boot times and application launches remain slower than an SSD. The 32 MB cache helps burst transfers but cannot eliminate the inherent seek delay of a mechanical disk.
