Server Purpose

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 is a 2U rack server built for data-centre workloads that need dual-processor performance. It ships with two Xeon E5-2630 v3 CPUs running at 2.4GHz and 64GB of DDR4 memory, giving 16 physical cores and 32 threads for virtualisation, database or general compute tasks. Buyers who need more than 64GB of RAM or who want GPU-accelerated workloads should look elsewhere because the installed memory already reaches the CPU-limited maximum and the Matrox G200eH2 graphics controller is intended only for basic console output.

Storage Interface Limits

The B140i controller provides software RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10 but it supports SATA drives only; SAS and NVME devices cannot be used on this controller. The chassis includes eight 2.5-inch SFF bays and two 500GB 7.2K SATA drives are installed, leaving six bays free for additional SATA HDDs or SSDs. NVME drives are physically supported in bay 2 only and would require a different controller and backplane that are not included with this configuration.

Pre-Order Checks

Verify that your rack can accept a 2U chassis and that you have redundant power circuits for the two hot-swap 500W supplies. The server has 24 DDR4 DIMM slots, 12 per processor, but the current 64GB installation already hits the maximum capacity supported by the fitted CPUs, so no further memory expansion is possible without a processor upgrade. Confirm that your operating system and management tools support the B140i software RAID stack and the Matrox G200eH2 video device before deployment.
