2U rack server for virtualisation clusters

The HP ProLiant DL380 G9 fits 2U of rack space and ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 twelve-core processor running at 2.3 GHz. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory occupy two of the twenty-four DIMM slots, leaving room for expansion. Dual 146 GB 15 K SAS drives on an H240ar controller provide redundant boot storage. Two hot-swap 500 W power supplies deliver redundancy for continuous operation.

Upgrade from single-socket G8 or tower platforms

Moving from an older single-socket rack or tower system adds a second processor socket, twenty-four DIMM slots and twelve-gigabit SAS connectivity. The jump is worth it when workloads exceed twelve cores or thirty-two gigabytes of memory and require RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 or 60 across eight small-form-factor bays. The platform also supports an additional processor for up to twenty-four cores and forty-eight threads.

Eight SFF bays handle mixed SAS and SATA workloads

The eight 2.5-inch bays accommodate the two included 146 GB SAS drives plus six additional SAS or SATA devices. Maximum installed memory reaches three terabytes across twenty-four slots when both processor sockets are populated. Storage headroom ends at the eight-bay limit unless a second or third drive cage is added. Graphics output relies on the integrated Matrox G200eH2, so GPU-accelerated compute is not supported.
