Dense 2U storage server

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drives into a 2U rack chassis. A single Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor at 1.9 GHz and 16 GB of DDR4 memory provide the compute base. The Perc H330 controller manages the three installed 2 TB SAS drives in RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 or 60. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies keep the platform running.

Sustained throughput under load

Twelve drive bays fed by a 12 Gbps SAS controller let the array maintain sequential bandwidth across long write sequences without the thermal throttling seen in smaller enclosures. The 7.2 K RPM SAS spindles deliver consistent IOPS for mixed read-write workloads such as backup targets or video archives. Redundant cooling and power remove single points of failure during extended duty cycles.

SAS and PCIe 3.0 interface limits

The H330 tops out at 12 Gbps per lane, so aggregate throughput cannot exceed the controller’s eight-lane PCIe 3.0 link. Maximum raw capacity is 52 TB when all twelve bays are populated with the largest supported drives. Network connectivity defaults to four 1 GbE ports; optional 10 GbE daughter cards require an open PCIe 3.0 slot.
