Raspberry Pi GPIO Breakout HAT

The Freenove Breakout Board is a terminal block shield HAT that fits the 40-pin GPIO header on Raspberry Pi models from the Zero series through the Pi 5. It adds screw terminals and a pin header so you can connect wires without soldering. Each GPIO pin is labelled with its BCM number beside the terminal. Status LEDs show high or low logic levels without loading the GPIO pins themselves. The board suits makers and engineers who need quick, removable wiring for sensors, relays or other peripherals.

2.54 mm pitch terminal block limits

All terminals use a 2.54 mm pitch, which matches the standard Raspberry Pi header spacing. This spacing limits wire gauge to sizes that fit the terminal openings and makes the board wider than the Pi Zero footprint. The shield is not compatible with the Raspberry Pi 400 or 500 because those models do not expose a standard 40-pin header in the same layout. Builders who need denser connections or a lower profile for tight enclosures should consider alternative wiring methods.

Upgrading from jumper wires or breadboards

This HAT replaces loose jumper wires and breadboard setups that can vibrate loose or misconnect during development. The screw terminals give a secure, repeatable connection for field deployment or long-term test rigs. The jump is worth it when you move from prototyping to a permanent install, or when you frequently swap sensors and need clear BCM labels to avoid wiring errors. It does not add extra GPIO pins or change the electrical characteristics of the Pi header.

Vragen over dit artikel

Which Raspberry Pi models does this breakout board support?

It fits Raspberry Pi 5, 4B, 3B+, 3B, 3A+, 2B, 1B+, 1A+, Zero 2 W, Zero W and Zero; it does not fit the 400 or 500 models.

What does the GPIO status LED show when a pin is driven high?

The LED lights when the GPIO outputs or reads a high level and stays off for a low level; the indicator is driven by an onboard chip so the GPIO line itself is not loaded.

What is the pin pitch of the terminal block and header?

Both the terminal block and the 40-pin header use a 2.54 mm pitch.
