Dual-socket 1U server for dense compute

The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a dual-socket 1U rack server built for dense scale-out workloads. Two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors each deliver 24 cores at 2.1 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 24 DIMM slots and supports up to 3 TB total capacity.

Eight-bay 2.5" storage with hardware RAID

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 400 GB SATA SSDs managed by a PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache and battery backup. The controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. An Intel X520/I350 daughter card provides two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, while iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote management. Hot-swap redundant 750 W power supplies and sliding rails are included.

Dual 750 W platinum-efficiency power supplies share the load and maintain operation if one unit fails. The 1U chassis uses front-to-rear airflow to cool the processors, memory and storage within a compact rack footprint. Fan speeds are managed by the integrated iDRAC firmware to balance acoustic output against component temperatures under varying workloads.
