The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack-mount server that supports up to eight 3.5-inch SATA or SAS drives and ships with two Intel Xeon E5-2660v4 processors, each with 14 cores and 35 MB cache. It includes 768 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory, a PERC H730 SAS RAID controller, dual 495 W power supplies and an Intel I350/X540 quad-port network card providing two 10 GbE and two 1 GbE links. iDRAC8 Enterprise remote management is licensed and firmware is updated before dispatch.

Suited to virtualisation hosts

This configuration suits buyers who need maximum memory capacity in a two-socket chassis and who plan to populate the eight large-form-factor bays with high-capacity hard drives. It is not for buyers who require GPU acceleration, more than two processor sockets or a different drive form factor such as 2.5-inch bays. The integrated graphics and lack of installed drives also mean it will not serve as a workstation or a ready-to-boot appliance without further parts.

The system arrives with every DIMM slot filled to the 768 GB maximum, so no further memory expansion is possible. Buyers who anticipate needing more RAM must select a different platform.
