The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drives in a 2U chassis. It ships with a single Xeon E5-2609v3 six-core processor at 1.9 GHz and 8 GB of DDR4 memory. The H730 RAID controller manages the three included 1 TB SATA drives and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Redundant 750 W power supplies are standard.

Twelve-bay limit and single CPU memory ceiling

The chassis accepts up to twelve 3.5-inch SAS or SATA drives for a maximum raw capacity of 52 TB. Memory speed reaches 2400 MT/s only when the installed processor supports that rate. With one CPU populated, only twelve of the twenty-four DIMM slots are active, capping installed memory at 8 GB per the supplied configuration. A second processor would unlock the remaining slots.

Single Xeon E5-2609v3 with six cores at 1.9 GHz

This unit includes one E5-2609v3 processor; a second socket is empty but available for an identical CPU. Buyers who need more than six cores or higher clock speeds must source a compatible second processor separately. The board uses the Intel C610 chipset and provides up to six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID card slot. Networking defaults to four 1 GbE ports with optional 10 GbE daughter cards.
