This new Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rackmount system equipped with two Intel Silver 4210R processors, each running at 2.4 GHz with 10 cores. It includes 32 GB of DDR4 memory installed as two 16 GB modules at 2666 MT/s. Four 480 GB SATA SSDs and an H730P RAID controller provide the initial storage configuration.

Suited for dense virtualisation.

The eight 2.5-inch drive bays and up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots support storage-heavy or I/O-intensive applications such as virtualisation clusters or database nodes. Dual 10 Gb and 1 Gb RJ45 ports handle high-throughput networking. The chassis lacks an optical drive and offers no built-in GPU support, so workloads requiring graphics acceleration or removable media will need a different platform.

Eight 2.5-inch drive bays set the storage ceiling

The R740 chassis is limited to eight 2.5-inch drive bays, and four are already populated with 480 GB SATA SSDs behind the H730P controller. This bay count determines how much additional local storage can be added without external enclosures. Buyers planning larger direct-attached capacity must verify that the remaining four bays meet their growth requirements.
