Dual Silver 4210R 10-core platform

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740 arrives as a 2U rack server fitted with two Intel Silver 4210R processors. Each CPU runs at 2.4 GHz with 13.75 MB cache and ten cores, giving twenty threads for virtualisation hosts or database nodes. Memory is populated with sixteen 32 GB DDR4 modules at 2666 MT/s for a total of 512 GB. Six 120 GB SATA SSDs sit behind an H730P RAID controller in the eight-bay 2.5-inch chassis.

From single-socket or lower-core counts

Moving from a single-socket system or from processors with fewer than ten cores adds parallel capacity for container clusters and multi-threaded workloads. The jump is worthwhile when licensing costs scale per socket and the extra threads reduce the node count needed. If the current estate already runs dual ten-core chips at similar frequency, the uplift is marginal and a denser configuration may suit better.

Fits standard 2U racks with PCIe Gen 3 expansion

The server occupies a 2U slot and supplies up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots for additional network adapters, GPU accelerators or storage controllers. Dual redundant 1100 W power supplies free the builder from single-point power planning. Onboard Intel X550 provides two 10 Gb RJ45 and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports, while iDRAC9 Enterprise handles remote management without a dedicated console. Rails, bezel and power cords are included.
