The Dell PowerEdge R740xd packs two Xeon Gold 5218R processors running at 2.1 GHz and 512GB of DDR4 memory into a 24-bay 2.5-inch chassis. It targets workloads that need high core counts and large memory capacity in a compact rack footprint. Buyers who require GPU acceleration or single-thread frequency above 3 GHz will need a different platform.

Storage-ready chassis

Twenty-four front-accessible 2.5-inch bays connect to a PERC H730P RAID controller over SAS, letting you populate the server with the exact mix of drives your application demands. No drives are installed, so capacity and redundancy are entirely up to the build. The 10 GbE dual-port adapter provides high-throughput networking without consuming a PCIe slot. Systems needing 3.5-inch drives or more than two processors cannot use this chassis.

Redundant 1100W power supplies share the load, keeping each unit in an efficient operating range during typical database or virtualisation workloads. Integrated iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote power cycling and sensor monitoring without attaching a console.
