The Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 is a 2U rack server built for storage-heavy workloads such as software-defined storage, backup repositories and media archives. Dual Intel Xeon Gold 6254 processors deliver 36 total cores at 3.1 GHz with 4.0 GHz turbo for demanding compute tasks. The 32 GB of DDR4-2933 ECC memory provides a starting point for memory-intensive applications.

Pre-installation checks

Verify that your rack provides a 2U slot with adequate airflow for a high-density storage chassis. Confirm that the LGA 3647 platform and 16 DDR4 slots match your planned memory expansion up to the 1 TB maximum. Ensure your network infrastructure can use the dual-port 1 GbE LOM and the dual-port 10/25 Gb SFP28 OCP 2.0 mezzanine card. The PERC H730P controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 for SAS and SATA drives.

Build and daily operation

Twenty-six hot-swap 3.5-inch drive trays give dense, front-accessible storage without removing the server from the rack. Redundant 1100 W platinum power supplies support hot-swap replacement during operation. The iDRAC 9 Enterprise module enables full remote management, monitoring and firmware updates over a dedicated network connection. Note that the front bezel and ready rails are not included, so plan for separate mounting hardware and physical security if required.
