2U rack server for virtualisation and databases

This DELL PowerEdge R730 fits a standard 2U rack space and ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 ten-core processor at 2.3 GHz. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 memory and two 300 GB 15K SAS drives on a PERC H730 RAID controller provide a ready-to-run platform for virtualisation hosts or database workloads. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and an iDRAC8 remote-management module are included.

Tool-free drive and memory installation

Eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays accept SAS or SATA drives without tools; trays are supplied with the drives. Twenty-four DDR4 DIMM slots — twelve per processor — are accessible after removing the top cover, and the PERC H730 installs in a dedicated slot so no PCIe slot is consumed. The single-CPU configuration leaves the second processor socket empty, so a matched Xeon must be added before populating the remaining twelve slots.

PCIe 3.0 and 1 GbE connectivity limits

Seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus the dedicated PERC slot support RAID controllers, NICs or GPU accelerators, but the platform tops out at PCIe 3.0 bandwidth. Onboard networking is a daughter card with four 1 GbE ports; optional NDC modules can add two or four 10 GbE ports, yet no higher-speed interfaces are native. Maximum memory capacity reaches 1536 GB with dual processors and 128 GB DIMMs, while storage capacity is capped at 64 TB across the eight bays.
