The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rack server built for organisations that run dense virtualisation, software-defined storage or high-performance computing workloads. Dual Xeon Gold 6148 processors deliver 20 cores each at 2.40 GHz with turbo up to 3.70 GHz. 512 GB of DDR4 3200 MHz memory across 16 modules supports large VM counts. 128 TB of nearline SAS storage on eight 16 TB drives provides capacity for bulk data.

Scales beyond single-socket limits

This system replaces single-socket servers that hit core or memory ceilings under heavy consolidation. The jump is worth it when workloads demand 40 total cores, 27.5 MB cache per CPU and 512 GB RAM simultaneously. Eight 3.5-inch drive bays filled with 7.2K RPM SAS disks remove the need for external arrays in many storage-heavy deployments. Redundant power supplies keep the platform running during a module swap.

Rack-ready with integrated management

The included rail kit mounts the 2U chassis in standard racks without extra hardware. A PERC H730 RAID controller with 2 GB cache manages the 12 Gb/s SAS drives. Broadcom BCM5720 quad-port 1 GbE provides baseline connectivity. iDRAC9 Express gives remote console and firmware control over a dedicated network link. Windows Server 2022 Standard covers 16 cores; the remaining cores require additional licensing. Drives and memory ship separately for on-site installation.
