The HP ProLiant DL160 Gen9 packs two Xeon E5-2650 v3 processors, each with ten cores at 2.3 GHz, into a single rack unit. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory and two 146 GB 15 K SAS drives are installed, driven by a Smart HBA H240 controller supporting RAID 0, 1 and 5. Redundant hot-swap 550 W power supplies keep the platform running.

This server suits workloads that scale across 20 physical cores and 40 threads, such as hypervisor clusters, database nodes or web tiers. The Matrox G200 graphics provide only basic console output, so buyers who require GPU compute or hardware video encoding should look elsewhere. Expansion is limited to the eight 2.5-inch bays and the PCIe slots available in the 1U chassis.

Memory ceiling fixed at 32 GB

The installed Xeon E5-2650 v3 processors restrict maximum memory capacity to 32 GB across the 16 DIMM slots, even though the platform supports larger modules with other CPUs. If the application demands more than 32 GB of RAM, a different processor choice or server model is required.
