Purpose-built 2U rack server

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 fits into a standard 2U rack slot and ships with dual Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processors running at 1.9 GHz. Sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 ECC registered memory occupy part of the 24 available DIMM slots. Two 1 TB 7.2K SAS drives connect through the Smart HBA H240ar controller which supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Redundant hot-swap 500 W power supplies keep the platform running during a single-unit failure.

Upgrade path from single-socket

Moving from a single-processor box or from quad-core E5 v2 parts adds a second socket and twelve total cores without changing rack footprint. The jump is worth it when workloads need more parallel threads than a single CPU can deliver but do not yet require the higher frequencies or core counts of the v4 family. The H240ar controller also replaces a basic onboard SATA RAID with 12 Gb SAS and 6 Gb SATA capability. Buyers who need more than 36 total cores or faster per-core clocks will need a different processor tier.

Capacity and headroom

Installed memory sits at 64 GB while the platform supports up to 3 TB across 24 slots, leaving ample headroom for virtualisation hosts or in-memory databases. The eight SFF drive bays accept additional 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives, and optional NVME or universal media bays can be added to bay 2 or 3. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics provide basic console output only; GPU-accelerated workloads are not supported. Storage expansion stops at the physical bay limit unless an external enclosure is attached.
