The MSI SPATIUM M480 is a 1TB internal solid-state drive built on the M.2 2280 form factor. It connects through a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and includes a heatsink designed for PS5 compatibility. The drive uses 3D NAND flash memory and a PHISON E18 controller for consumer workloads.

Sustained throughput with PHISON E18 controller

Under continuous load the PHISON E18 controller manages data flow across the PCIe 4.0 x4 lanes to maintain sequential reads up to 7000 MBps and writes up to 5500 MBps. The integrated heatsink dissipates heat during extended transfers so performance remains stable rather than throttling after a short burst. 256-bit AES encryption secures data without reducing throughput.

PCIe 4.0 x4 lane limits and physical constraints

The four-lane PCIe 4.0 interface caps maximum bandwidth at the drive's rated 7000 MBps read and 5500 MBps write ceilings. The M.2 2280 dimensions and attached heatsink define the physical space required inside a laptop, desktop or PS5 console. No higher throughput is possible without moving to a newer interface generation.
