M.2 2280 DIY cooling kit

The SilverStone SST-TP02-M2 adds an aluminum alloy heatsink and three thermal pads to a 2280 M.2 SSD. It targets builders who see thermal throttling during large file transfers. The kit fits the standard motherboard M.2 slot without modification.

Upgrade from bare SSD operation

Without the kit a test transfer took 240 seconds on a Core i5-6500 platform with DDR4 2133 memory. With the heatsink and pads fitted the same transfer completed in 180 seconds. The jump is worth it when sustained writes cause the drive to slow down.

Tool-free install with silicone bands

Two bands hold the 70mm wide heatsink onto the SSD using the included 1.0mm blue pad and two gray pads of 1.0mm and 1.5mm thickness. Misaligning the pads or using the wrong thickness for a double-sided drive are the common errors that reduce contact.
