12-bay rackmount NAS for multi-user workloads

The Synology DS2422+ is a 12-bay rackmount NAS powered by a Ryzen V1500B 4-core 2.2GHz processor and 32GB DDR4 ECC SODIMM memory. It ships with 96TB of raw capacity across twelve 8TB SATA 3.5-inch drives. The unit runs Synology DSM and provides four 1GbE LAN ports with link aggregation and failover support.

Upgrade from smaller appliances

This system replaces entry-level NAS units or DAS arrays when concurrent user counts, iSCSI LUN demand, or backup retention policies exceed the limits of fewer bays and lower memory. The jump is worth it when workloads require Btrfs-based advanced LUN iSCSI service, VM and container storage, or a network video recorder for large surveillance deployments.

Limits of 1GbE and single power supply

Aggregate throughput is capped by the four 1GbE interfaces even with link aggregation, so sustained sequential transfers cannot exceed that ceiling. The single power supply creates a single point of failure for uptime-critical roles. The expansion port allows capacity growth, but the 1GbE uplink remains the bottleneck for network-intensive tasks.
