USB 3.1 Gen 2 limits NVMe to 10 Gbps

Real-world NVMe throughput reaches 900 MB/s read and 600 MB/s write only when the host port is USB 3.1 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 3. On slower USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 ports the same NVMe drive will run at the lower bus speed. SATA drives are capped at the 6 Gbps SATA link regardless of the USB port generation.

Overheating protection forces read-only

If the drive overheats the firmware automatically switches to read-only mode, throttles transfer speed or pauses the operation until the SSD cools.
