High-density blade for virtualization and HPC

The Dell EMC PowerEdge M640 is a half-height blade server built for dense compute clusters. It fits into PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis and targets workloads such as virtualization, private cloud and high-performance computing. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors supply 20 cores each at 2.1 GHz with 3.9 GHz turbo. Buyers needing GPU acceleration or desktop-style expansion slots will not find them here.

Dual CPUs, 512 GB DDR4 and dual 10 Gb ports

Sixteen 32 GB DDR4 registered ECC modules fill every slot for 512 GB total, leaving no room for further memory growth without removing modules. The integrated PERC S140 controller manages two 1.92 TB SATA SSDs in RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10. A Broadcom 57810S-K daughter card adds dual 10 Gb network ports. The Matrox G200 graphics with 8 MB video memory serves only basic console output.

Replaces older blades when core count

This configuration upgrades from earlier half-height blades that max out at lower core counts or smaller memory ceilings. The jump is worth it when consolidation ratios demand 56 cores per server and 1.5 TB memory capacity headroom. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote lifecycle automation. Organisations without a compatible MX or M1000e chassis cannot deploy this blade.

Questions sur cet article

What does the Dell 57810S-K 10Gb dual-port blade network daughter card provide?

The Dell Broadcom 57810S-K card adds two 10Gb Ethernet ports to the blade through the chassis midplane, enabling high-speed network connectivity without using a PCIe slot.

What chassis and physical space does this half-height blade require?

The PowerEdge M640 fits a half-height slot in either a PowerEdge MX or M1000e chassis and uses 2.5-inch drive bays for its two installed SATA SSDs.

How is the blade installed and what step is often missed?

Slide the blade into an empty half-height bay until the latch clicks, then use the iDRAC9 Enterprise interface to complete initial network and user configuration before powering on the operating system installer.
