Versatile 2U rack server for virtualization

The Dell PowerEdge R540 is a 2U rack server built for virtualization, database hosting, and file or application workloads. Dual Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors provide 16 cores each at 2.1 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo. 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight modules supports demanding multi-threaded tasks. Eight 3.5-inch drive bays come populated with 4 TB SAS drives.

H740P RAID controller

The PERC H740P controller adds 8 GB cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50, and 60 plus pass-through for SAS and SATA drives. A battery backs the cache to protect data during power loss. iDRAC9 Enterprise enables remote monitoring, automation, and administration without an operating system. Dual redundant 750 W platinum power supplies and included rails with a front bezel complete the package.

SAS 12 Gb/s interface limits and two-socket maximum

The 12 Gb/s SAS interface caps drive throughput at the controller and backplane level. Mechanical 7.2 K RPM drives constrain random IOPS compared with solid-state alternatives. The LGA 3647 platform supports a maximum of two processors, so the installed pair already reaches the socket limit. Memory tops out at 384 GB across 16 slots, leaving eight slots free for expansion.
