The Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U rack server built for dense scale-out data center workloads. It ships with two Intel Xeon Gold 6130 processors, each running at 2.1 GHz with 16 cores. The system includes 256 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across eight 32 GB modules. A PERC H730P controller, dual 300 GB 10K SAS drives, quad-port networking and iDRAC9 Enterprise complete the package.

Virtualisation hosts needing SAS density

This configuration suits teams running virtualisation clusters, database nodes or high-performance compute tasks that benefit from 32 total cores and large memory capacity. The eight 2.5-inch drive bays and 12 Gb/s SAS controller support RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Buyers who want more than eight internal drive bays or require a different network interface should look at other platforms.

Eight 2.5-inch SAS drive bays

The chassis provides eight hot-swap 2.5-inch bays wired to the PERC H730P 2 GB controller. Only SAS and SATA drives are supported in these bays. If your deployment needs a larger number of internal slots or a different drive form factor, this server will not meet that requirement.
