The Dell PowerEdge R650 is a 1U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Silver 4316 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 20 cores. It ships with 512 GB of DDR4-2666 registered ECC memory across 16 modules and a PERC H755 RAID controller backed by 8 GB of non-volatile cache. Ten 1.92 TB SATA SSDs fill the front bays, while dual 1400 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise provide redundancy and remote management out of the box.

Sustained throughput under load

The dual-socket design keeps all 40 cores fed by DDR4 channels that scale to 3200 MT/s, so memory bandwidth grows with the workload instead of throttling after a burst. The H755 controller maintains consistent write latency across RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 because its battery-backed cache absorbs random I/O spikes. Redundant hot-swap power supplies share the load evenly, preventing a single rail from overheating during extended database or virtualization runs.

Storage and expansion ceiling

Ten 2.5-inch bays are wired to the H755 through SATA 6 Gb/s lanes, capping each SSD at the interface limit rather than the drive potential. The OCP 3.0 slot carries a Broadcom 57412 dual-port 10 GbE SFP+ adapter, so network throughput stops at 10 Gb/s per port unless an additional card is fitted. PCIe Gen4 lanes are present on the platform, but the installed controller and drives operate at Gen3 speeds, leaving headroom for future NVMe or SAS upgrades that the current backplane does not expose.
