The PowerEdge R650 packs two Xeon Silver 4316 processors, each with 20 cores at 2.3 GHz and a 3.4 GHz turbo, into a 1U rack chassis. With 256 GB of DDR4 ECC memory installed across eight 32 GB modules, the system targets dense virtualisation clusters, database tiers and private-cloud nodes that need high core counts and large memory capacity in minimal rack space.

Step up from single-socket or lower-core servers

Moving from a single-processor box or from CPUs with fewer than 20 cores per socket adds the second socket and 40 total threads, which pays off when workloads scale across NUMA boundaries or when licensing is socket-based. The jump is worth it when memory capacity must grow beyond a single processor’s channel limit or when the PERC H755 RAID controller with 8 GB NV cache can accelerate mixed read-write datasets.

PCIe Gen4 and OCP 3.0 set the I/O ceiling

The platform uses PCIe Gen4 lanes for the H755 controller and the dual-port 10 GbE SFP+ OCP 3.0 card, so storage and network throughput are bounded by that generation’s lane budget. Ten 2.5-inch SAS/SATA trays share the backplane bandwidth, and the 2 TB DDR4 ceiling limits total memory expansion regardless of DIMM density.
