The Dell PowerEdge R650xs is a new 1U rack server fitted with two Intel Xeon Gold 5317 processors running at 3.0 GHz with 12 cores each. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 2933 MHz registered ECC memory across four modules and a PERC H745 RAID controller with 4 GB non-volatile cache. Ten 1.92 TB SATA SSDs fill the front 2.5-inch bays, while a quad-port 1 GbE OCP 3.0 card and iDRAC9 Enterprise handle networking and remote management. Dual 1400 W platinum power supplies, rails and a bezel complete the package.

Virtualisation hosts, not GPU farms

This configuration suits teams that need high core density and all-flash storage in a single rack unit for virtualisation, container platforms or dense database workloads. The fixed 64 GB memory capacity and lack of GPU provisioning mean buyers who need larger memory footprints or accelerator cards for AI training should look at a different chassis.

Ten-drive SATA limit

The ten 2.5-inch SATA bays and PERC H745 controller define the storage ceiling: no NVMe or SAS drives can be added without a different backplane and controller. If the workload demands more than ten drives or NVMe latency, this server cannot meet the requirement.
