Dell PowerEdge R730 8-bay server
The Dell PowerEdge R730 is a 2U rack-mount server fitted with two Intel Xeon E5-2650 v3 processors running at 2.3 GHz. It ships with 768 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory and a PERC H730 SAS RAID controller. The chassis provides eight 3.5-inch drive bays ready for SATA or SAS hard drives. Integrated iDRAC8 Enterprise remote management is included. This unit is sold new with no drives installed.
Capacity and headroom
Each Xeon delivers ten cores and 25 MB cache, giving twenty cores total for virtualisation or database workloads. Memory is at the platform maximum of 768 GB, so no further DIMMs can be added. The eight drive bays offer generous raw capacity for large arrays, while the PERC H730 handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Dual 495 W power supplies provide redundancy. The network card supplies two 10 GbE and two 1 GbE ports.
Single deciding specification
Maximum memory is fixed at 768 GB DDR4; buyers who need more RAM must choose a different platform. Drives are not included, so storage must be purchased separately. The system supports only two processors, both sockets are already populated. Integrated graphics are basic and not suited to GPU compute tasks. Rail kit is available on request but not supplied by default.
