24-Bay 2U Server for Data-Intensive Workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R730xd is a 2U rack server equipped with twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays. Two Intel Xeon E5-2680 v4 processors provide twenty-eight cores at 2.4 GHz with 3.3 GHz turbo. The system ships with 128 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across eight 16 GB modules. It targets midsize and large enterprises running data warehouses, e-commerce platforms, VDI, databases or HPC data nodes.

Upgrade from Smaller Arrays or Older Controllers

The PERC H730 controller with 1 GB cache supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Moving from a controller without battery-backed cache or from a chassis with fewer bays lets you run larger mixed read-write datasets on SATA SSDs. The jump is worth it when workloads need hardware RAID across twenty-four drives and the C610 chipset's twenty-four DIMM slots for future memory growth.

Limits of the SATA 6 Gb/s Interface

Each of the twenty-four installed 800 GB SSDs connects over SATA 6 Gb/s, capping sequential throughput at the interface ceiling. The quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for cluster traffic. The two 750 W platinum power supplies provide redundancy but the platform maxes at two sockets and 1.5 TB of DDR4, so compute or memory scaling beyond those points requires a newer generation.
