Dense 2U rack server for storage-heavy workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays into a 2U chassis, giving a maximum raw capacity of 52 TB with SAS or SATA drives. A single Xeon E5-2650 v3 provides ten cores at 2.3 GHz and twenty threads, while the Perc H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. The system ships with 16 GB of DDR4 across twenty-four DIMM slots and includes a DVD-ROM drive.

Dual 750 W redundant supplies with hot-swap cooling

Two redundant 750 W power supplies share the load and can be swapped without shutting down. The 2U form factor uses internal airflow channels that direct cool air across the processors, memory and drive bays before exhausting it at the rear. Under typical mixed read and write activity the fans run at moderate speeds, keeping inlet temperatures within specification while acoustic output remains suitable for a standard server room.

Sustained throughput with controller-backed caching

The H730 card includes 1 GB of cache backed by a capacitor, allowing write acknowledgements to complete before data reaches the platters during extended write streams. Six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID slot leave room for additional networking or acceleration cards without reducing drive count. The iDRAC8 remote-management module provides out-of-band monitoring and power control even when the host operating system is unresponsive.
