The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drives in a 2U chassis, making it suited for archive, backup or media workloads that need high capacity in limited rack space. A single Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor at 1.9 GHz and 16 GB of DDR4 handle the storage controller and light application duties.

SAS interface and controller limits

The PERC H730 RAID controller supports SAS and SATA drives at 12 Gbps and manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across the installed three 2 TB 7.2 K SAS disks. Maximum raw capacity reaches 52 TB when all twelve bays are populated, and the controller occupies a dedicated slot so all six PCIe 3.0 slots remain free for additional I/O.

Redundant power and hot-swap bays

Two 750 W redundant power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails, while hot-plug drive trays allow disk replacement without shutdown. The 2U form factor measures 26.8 by 17.44 by 3.4 inches and includes iDRAC8 remote management, a DVD-ROM drive and a four-port 1 GbE daughter card for out-of-band and network access.
