The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug drives into a 2U chassis, giving storage-heavy workloads a compact home. A single Xeon E5-2650 v3 supplies ten cores at 2.3 GHz with twenty threads for virtualised or database tasks. Ninety-six gigabytes of DDR4 populate the 24 DIMM slots, reaching the processor’s supported maximum. The Perc H330 controller manages RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60 across the three included 300 GB 15K SAS drives.

Dual 750 W supplies and front-to-rear airflow

Redundant 750-watt hot-swap power supplies share the load so a single failure does not interrupt operation. Air moves from the front bezel through the drive cage and over the CPU heatsinks before exiting the rear, keeping inlet temperatures steady during typical database or file-serving duty. The H330 controller and four-port 1 GbE daughter card add minimal heat, so fan speeds remain moderate and acoustic output stays low enough for a rack row in a shared space.

Sustained throughput limited by drive spindle speed

Under continuous write-heavy loads the three 15K SAS spindles become the bottleneck long before the CPU or DDR4 memory saturate. RAID 5 or 6 rebuilds stretch over many hours because the controller must read every sector on the surviving drives at 6 Gbps SAS line rate. Thermal headroom remains ample — fans ramp only when inlet air exceeds design limits — but IOPS plateau at the mechanical ceiling, so workloads needing steady random write performance will outgrow the installed array.
