The Dell PowerEdge R730XD fits twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays into a 2U rack chassis. Two Xeon E5-2650 v3 processors provide twenty cores at 2.3 GHz with hyper-threading for forty threads. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 memory and a PERC H730 RAID controller with one gigabyte cache support RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across three installed 600 GB 15 K SAS drives. Dual 750 W redundant power supplies and iDRAC8 remote management complete the platform.

This server targets databases, backup targets and virtualisation hosts that need large SAS or SATA capacity in minimal rack space. Twelve bays and the H730 controller scale to fifty-two terabytes of raw storage. Buyers who need more than twelve drive bays or require PCIe-attached flash should evaluate alternative chassis. The 2U height limits full-height PCIe cards to half-length form factors.

Twelve 3.5-inch hot-plug bays decide fit

The single specification that determines suitability is the twelve-bay 3.5-inch hot-plug backplane. It accepts SAS and SATA drives only, so the storage media choice is locked to those interfaces. If the deployment requires 2.5-inch density, U.2 or M.2 slots, this chassis cannot accommodate them.
