The PowerEdge R730xd packs two 14-core Xeon processors at 2.4 GHz with 512 GB of DDR4 ECC memory into a 2U rack chassis. Twenty-four 400 GB SATA SSDs sit behind a PERC H730 controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. It targets midsize and large enterprises running databases, VDI, data warehousing or HPC data-node tasks.

SATA SSD throughput caps sustained write performance

All 24 drives use the SATA 6 Gb/s interface, so sequential throughput tops out at the link speed regardless of the controller’s 12 Gb/s SAS capability. The H730’s 1 GB cache and battery-backed write-back help random I/O, but the drives themselves limit peak bandwidth. The quad-port network daughter card adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ links for fabric connectivity.

Hot-swap bays and redundant platinum PSUs simplify

Tool-less 2.5-inch drive carriers slide out the front while the server stays online. Dual 750 W platinum-efficiency supplies share the load and allow one unit to fail without downtime.
