Dual 14-core Xeon server for virtualisation

The Dell PowerEdge R730xd fits in a 2U rack slot and ships with two Xeon E5-2660 v4 processors running at 2.0 GHz with a 3.2 GHz turbo frequency. Each CPU provides 14 cores for a total of 28 cores, backed by 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across four 16 GB modules. The PERC H730 controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. Two 800 GB SATA SSDs are installed in the front 2.5-inch bays.

The chassis accepts two hot-swap 750 W platinum power supplies and needs a rack deep enough for a 2U server with ready rails attached. Network connectivity uses a quad-port daughter card that provides two 1 GbE ports and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports, so matching SFP+ transceivers and fibre or direct-attach cables must be on hand. Memory expansion uses 24 DDR4 slots with a 1.5 TB ceiling; any added modules must be DDR4 registered ECC. The iDRAC8 Enterprise module requires a dedicated management network drop.

Under continuous demand the dual 750 W supplies share load and keep the system running if one unit fails. The H730 controller’s 1 GB cache with battery backup protects write performance during long database or VDI sessions. Dual Xeon processors maintain 2.0 GHz base clocks across all 28 cores without relying on short turbo bursts. The 10 Gb SFP+ links sustain high-throughput storage traffic, while iDRAC8 Enterprise gives remote console and sensor monitoring throughout extended operations.
