The Dell PowerEdge R740 is a 2U rackmount system fitted with two Intel Silver 4210R processors, each providing 10 cores at 2.4 GHz. It ships with 512 GB of DDR4 memory in 16 modules of 32 GB running at 2666 MT/s. Two 800 GB SAS SSDs are installed behind a H730P RAID controller, and the chassis offers eight 2.5-inch drive bays for expansion. Remote management is handled by iDRAC9 Enterprise.

Check PCIe slots and network needs

The server provides up to eight PCIe Gen 3 slots for add-in cards; verify that your planned adapters fit this generation and physical space. Network connectivity includes two 10 Gb RJ45 ports and two 1 Gb RJ45 ports from the Intel X550 controller, so confirm your switch and cabling support these speeds. No optical drive is present, so installation media must be delivered via USB or network boot. Redundant 1100 W power supplies are included; ensure your rack PDU can supply the required connectors.

Thermals noise and power in normal use

Dual processors and a full memory population mean the system moves significant airflow through the 2U chassis; expect audible fan noise typical of enterprise rack gear. The redundant 1100 W power supplies share the load, drawing only what the configured components require under normal operation. iDRAC9 Enterprise allows remote monitoring of temperatures, fan speeds and power consumption so you can track thermal behaviour without being at the rack.
