The Dell PowerEdge R740 fits two Intel Xeon Platinum 8160 processors, each with 24 cores at 2.1 GHz and a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system ships with 512 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across 16 populated slots. It is built for virtualization, database and high-performance computing tasks that demand maximum core count in a 2U form factor.

Storage controller and drive bays define expansion

The integrated PERC H730P controller provides 2 GB cache and supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode over a 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA interface. Only eight 2.5-inch drive trays are included and no drives are installed. The chassis does not support additional internal bays beyond these eight positions, so total raw capacity is capped by the drives you populate.

Memory ceiling of 3 TB across 24 slots decides

With 16 slots already occupied by 32 GB modules, eight slots remain free for future upgrades using DDR4 registered ECC DIMMs. The platform maximum is 3 TB, so the configuration can scale roughly six times from its current 512 GB.
