The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for workloads that demand high internal capacity. Two Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors provide 32 total cores at 2.6 GHz with 3.7 GHz turbo headroom. The chassis holds twelve 3.5-inch drive bays, all populated with 6 TB enterprise SATA drives spinning at 7.2 K RPM.

Twelve-bay chassis with hardware RAID

A Dell PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache manages the twelve drives through SATA and SAS paths, supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. The board includes an Intel X520/I350 daughter card that adds two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports for storage traffic. iDRAC 9 Enterprise gives full remote control over power, console and firmware without needing a local display or keyboard.

Dual 750 W platinum supplies and 512 GB ECC memory

Redundant hot-swap 750 W platinum power supplies keep the system running if one unit fails or during maintenance. The 512 GB DDR4 registered ECC memory fills sixteen of twenty-four slots at 2666 MHz, leaving room for expansion up to the platform maximum. The server targets software-defined storage, virtual desktop infrastructure and service-provider environments rather than GPU-heavy compute or single-threaded burst workloads.
