2U Storage-Focused Rack Server

The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U rack server built for storage-dense workloads such as software-defined storage or virtual desktop infrastructure. It ships with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6142 processors, each running 16 cores at 2.6 GHz with a 3.7 GHz turbo frequency. The system includes 64 GB of DDR4 2666 MHz registered ECC memory across four modules. Twenty-four 2.5-inch drive bays are populated with 300 GB 10K SAS hard drives.

SAS 12 Gb/s Controller and Drive Limits

Storage is managed by a Dell PERC H730P controller with 2 GB cache, supporting SAS and SATA drives at 12 Gb/s. The controller handles RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 plus pass-through mode. All twenty-four front bays are filled with SAS hard drives, leaving no empty slots for additional 2.5-inch devices without removing existing drives. The board provides 24 DDR4 slots, of which 20 remain open for future memory expansion up to the 3 TB platform maximum.

Dual 16-Core Xeon Gold 6142 Processors

The server reaches its processor ceiling with two Xeon Gold 6142 CPUs already installed, so no further CPU upgrades are possible. Each processor uses the LGA 3647 socket on the Intel C620 chipset. Network connectivity comes from an Intel X520/I350 daughter card delivering two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. Remote management is handled by iDRAC 9 Enterprise, and power is supplied by redundant 1100 W platinum-efficiency units.
