This new Dell PowerEdge R740xd2 packs twenty-six 3.5-inch drive bays and dual Intel Xeon Gold 6230 processors into a 2U rackmount chassis. It ships with sixty-four gigabytes of DDR4 ECC memory and a PERC H730P controller managing twenty-six 8TB SATA hard drives. The platform targets software-defined storage, backup repositories and media archives that demand maximum capacity per rack unit. Dual 1100-watt platinum supplies and iDRAC 9 Enterprise provide redundant power and remote management out of the box.

Suited for capacity-first workloads.

Organisations building large backup targets, object stores or video surveillance archives will use every bay and the twelve-gigabit SAS/SATA controller. Buyers who need more than two processors, more than one terabyte of memory or additional PCIe slots for GPU accelerators should look elsewhere. The sixteen DIMM slots and two-socket limit are fixed by the chassis design. Workloads requiring faster flash tiers or higher core counts per socket are not a fit for this configuration.
