The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack-mount server system built around four Intel Xeon Gold 5118 processors, each running at 2.3 GHz with 12 cores. It ships with 512 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 16 DIMM slots and a Dell PERC H730P storage controller with 2 GB cache. Eight 1.2 TB 10K SAS drives and a quad-port network daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ connections are included.

Four physical CPUs installed, no sockets free

The defining specification is that all four LGA 3647 processor sockets are already populated with Xeon Gold 5118 CPUs, so no further processor upgrades are possible. Memory can still be expanded to the 6 TB maximum using the remaining 32 DIMM slots, and the PERC H730P controller supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Redundant 1600 W platinum power supplies and sliding rails are included.
