Rack server with twelve 3.5-inch bays

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 occupies 2U of rack space and provides twelve large-form-factor drive bays for 3.5-inch SAS drives. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor running at 1.9 GHz and 4 GB of DDR4 ECC registered memory installed across 24 DIMM slots. Two 600 GB 15K SAS drives and dual 500 W redundant hot-swap power supplies are included.

SAS interface limited to 6 Gbps per drive

The Smart HBA H240ar controller supports 12 Gbps SAS and 6 Gbps SATA signalling, yet the supplied 15K drives operate at 6 Gbps. RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 are available, but the controller lacks write-back cache unless a separate cache module is added. Maximum installed memory is capped at 4 GB per the supplied configuration, restricting virtualisation density without additional DIMMs.

Slide rails required for rack mounting

The chassis uses tool-less slide rails that must be purchased separately if not already present in the cabinet. Memory population follows strict per-processor rules: 12 slots per CPU, with speed limited by the installed processor capability. Adding a second processor unlocks the remaining slots and raises the core count to twelve, but the single-CPU configuration leaves half the memory bus unpopulated.
