Purpose-built compute

The HP ProLiant DL380 Gen9 is a 2U rack server equipped with a twelve-core Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 running at 2.3 GHz. Thirty-two gigabytes of DDR4 memory and a Smart Array P440 controller with 4 GB flash-backed write cache support virtualisation clusters and database workloads. Dual 500 W redundant power supplies keep the platform running through a single supply failure.

Capacity and headroom

Two 1 TB 7.2K SAS drives provide a mirrored boot volume or a small active dataset; twenty-two additional 2.5-inch bays accept further SAS drives for growth. The installed memory fills a fraction of the twenty-four DIMM slots, leaving room to scale toward the platform maximum. The P440 handles RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across all attached drives.

SAS interface limits

The controller operates at 12 Gb/s and 6 Gb/s SAS speeds, so drive throughput tops out at the link rate of each attached device. Twelve-gigabit drives deliver full controller bandwidth; six-gigabit drives run at half that ceiling. The Matrox G200eH2 graphics core supplies only basic console output and does not accelerate compute workloads.
