Compact 6-bay NAS for business workloads

The Synology DiskStation DS1621xs+ is a desktop NAS built around a Xeon D-1527 4-core 2.2 GHz processor with 32 GB DDR4 ECC memory. It ships with 108 TB of raw storage across six 18 TB SATA 3.5-inch drives and a 1 TB M.2 NVMe SSD. The DSM operating system supports iSCSI targets, file storage, email servers, domain controllers, VM and container storage, and large-scale surveillance recording.

Assembly required for drives and memory

The chassis arrives sealed; the six 3.5-inch hard drives and memory upgrades are packaged separately and must be installed before first use. Drive bays use tool-less trays for 3.5-inch SATA disks, while the M.2 slot accepts a 2280 NVMe module. Connectivity includes two 1 GbE ports, one 10 GbE port with link aggregation and failover, three USB 3.2 ports and two eSATA ports. A single power supply feeds the unit.

SATA throughput and single-supply limits

The six SATA drive bays share the backplane bandwidth, so sustained sequential performance is bounded by the SATA interface rather than the 10 GbE uplink. The single power supply means no redundancy if that module fails. Btrfs provides advanced LUN iSCSI features and snapshots, while the Xeon D-1527 tops out at 2.7 GHz turbo for compute-heavy tasks. Buyers needing dual power supplies or PCIe expansion cards should look elsewhere.
