Dell PERC H710 RAID controller
The Dell PERC H710 is a hardware RAID controller card built around the LSI SAS 2208 dual-core PowerPC ROC. It delivers 512 MB of non-volatile cache and supports RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 across SAS and SATA drives. The card targets servers and workstations that need protected, high-throughput internal storage arrays.
PCIe 2.0 x8 host bus and dual mini-SAS SFF-8087
The controller installs in an eight-lane PCI Express 2.0 slot and presents two internal mini-SAS SFF-8087 connectors for cabling to backplanes or drive cages. A single card can manage up to 32 SAS or SATA devices, so cable routing and enclosure space become the practical limits rather than the controller itself. The PCIe 2.0 interface sets the host bandwidth ceiling for sustained array traffic.
Upgrades from entry-level or software RAID
Moving from a basic HBA or software RAID adds dedicated parity calculation, battery-backed cache protection and support for RAID 6, 50 and 60. The jump is worthwhile when workloads demand redundancy beyond mirroring, consistent write latency under load or the ability to span large drive counts without host CPU overhead. Systems limited to PCIe 1.x slots or lacking internal mini-SAS cabling cannot use this card.
