The Dell PowerEdge R430 is a 1U rack server built around two Intel Xeon E5-2630 v3 processors, each with eight cores running at 2.4 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory, three 1.2 TB 7.2 K SAS drives and a PERC H730 RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. A single 550 W redundant power supply, DVD drive and iDRAC8 remote management are included. It suits small-to-medium workloads such as virtualisation hosts, database nodes or file servers that need hot-plug drive bays in a compact rack footprint.

What to verify before ordering

The chassis provides eight 2.5-inch hot-plug bays for SAS or SATA drives; three are populated and trays are included for those drives. Two PCIe 3.0 slots are available for additional controllers or network cards. Four 1 GbE ports handle network connectivity. The system arrives without an operating system. Memory uses DDR4 DIMMs only, with twelve slots total and a maximum supported capacity of 384 GB. Ensure your rack can accept a 1U unit and that you have suitable rails, as the rail kit is not included.

Thermals, noise and power in normal use

A single 550 W redundant power supply feeds both processors, memory, drives and controller. The 1U form factor relies on high-speed internal fans to move air across the CPU heatsinks and drive cage, so acoustic output is typical of dense rack servers and not suited to quiet office environments. Power draw will vary with workload, drive count and PCIe cards installed. iDRAC8 allows remote monitoring of temperatures, fan speeds and power consumption so you can track thermal behaviour without physical access.
