The Dell PowerEdge R730XD is a 2U rack server built for storage-dense workloads. It ships with a single Intel Xeon E5-2609 v3 six-core processor at 1.9GHz and 48GB of DDR4 memory across 24 DIMM slots. The chassis supports up to 24 hot-plug 2.5-inch SAS or SATA drives and includes a DVD-ROM drive. Dual 750W redundant power supplies are fitted as standard.

Upgrade from single-socket or smaller bays

Moving to this platform adds a second processor socket and 24 drive bays compared with single-socket 1U or 12-bay systems. The jump is worth it when you need RAID 0/1/5/6/10/50/60 across many spindles and the option to scale memory to 1536GB with a second CPU installed. The Perc H730 controller with 1GB cache and 12Gbps SAS bandwidth handles the array workload.

PCIe 3.0 and 1GbE ceiling

The system provides up to six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID card slot for expansion cards. Networking defaults to a four-port 1GbE daughter card with optional 10GbE upgrades.
