1U rack server for small workloads

The Dell PowerEdge R230 is a 1U rack server built around a single Intel Xeon E3-1220v5 quad-core processor running at 3GHz. It ships with 4GB of DDR4 memory and two 300GB 15K SAS drives managed by a PERC H330 RAID controller supporting RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, 50 and 60. The chassis includes a DVD-ROM drive, a 250W cabled power supply and dual 1GbE network ports. It is suited for basic file, print or web serving in space-constrained racks.

Check power, memory ceiling and bay count

Verify that your rack can supply standard AC power for the fixed 250W cabled unit, as no redundant hot-swap option is present. The system supports a maximum of 4GB installed memory despite four DIMM slots accepting larger modules, so plan for the 4GB limit unless a processor upgrade changes the ceiling. Only two 3.5-inch cabled drive bays are available, restricting internal storage to the supplied SAS drives or SATA replacements. Two PCIe 3.0 slots provide one full-height x16 and one low-profile x8 for add-in cards.

Replaces older 1U single-socket towers

This server upgrades from older single-socket 1U systems that lack DDR4 memory and 12Gbps SAS connectivity. The jump is worth it when you need 15K SAS performance and hardware RAID 5 or 6 in a 1U form factor without moving to a dual-socket platform. It does not suit buyers who need more than two internal drives, redundant power supplies or memory beyond 4GB. Remote management uses iDRAC8 Express with optional Enterprise upgrades.
